Lonely Mourning Squirrel

When I was out in the yard yesterday, I heard a commotion in our window well. I discovered two little squirrels – one dead and the other alive. I still don’t know how the one died, so I assumed that one had killed the other. I put the board pictured above in the window well so the squirrel that was alive could leave. I removed the board later in the day after the squirrel had left. I still didn’t know what to do with the dead squirrel.

Today we went to go see if the dead squirrel was still there. We did find it still there, but to our surprise the other little squirrel was caught back in the window well. It was now obvious that he didn’t kill the other one, but was worried and trying to help it. We put the board back in so it could get out again. This time we took out the dead squirrel and gave it a proper burial. My kids were so touched by the love of one squirrel the other that they wanted to make grave stone markers for its grave.
